Emittance Dilution Due to Slow Alignment Drifts in the Main Linacs of the Nlc

چکیده
The tight tolerances in the main linacs of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) result in a large sensitivity of the beam emittance to slow alignment drifts. Once the accelerator is tuned, the optimized emittances must be maintained. Slow alignment drifts will make resteering and reoptimization necessary. The frequency of these linac reoptimizations is an important parameter that determines how well the linear collider can be operated. We present simulation results that address this question for the main linacs of the NLC. We will show that the e ects of alignment drifts can indeed be handled. Fabrication and Tolerance Issues and their Influence on Multi-Bunch BBU and Emittance Dilution in the Construction of X-Band RDDS Linacs for the NLC
The main linacs of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) will contain several thousand X-band RDDS (Rounded Damped Detuned Structures). The transverse wakefield in the structures is reduced by detuning the modal frequencies such that they destructively interfere and by four damping manifolds per structure which provide weak damping. Errors in the fabrication of the individual cells and in the alignmen...
متن کاملOperation and Expected Performance of the NLC
‘The main linacs for the proposed Next Linear Collider (NLC) provide acceleration of up to 500 GeV per beam. The linacs operate in a regime where unavoidable imperfections and even natural ground motion cause significant emittance dilutions. In order to achieve the NLC luminosity goals, small emittance beams must be transported with an emittance growth of less than SLAC-PUB-7354 November 1996 O...
متن کاملZDR - Simulation Studies of the NLC Main Linacs
This study was published as part of the Next Linear Collider (NLC) Zeroth order Design Report (ZDR) [1]. It addresses the problems of transporting very small emittance beams in the main linacs of the NLC. Several mechanisms of emittance dilution and correction are calculated in detail. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the NLC main linac design under the assumption that the speci ed de...
متن کاملEmittance and Trajectory Control in the Main Linacs of the Nlc
The main linacs of the next generation of linear colliders need to accelerate the particle beams to energies of up to 750 GeV while maintaining very small emittances. This paper describes the main mechanisms of static emittance growth in the main linacs of the Next Linear Collider (NLC). We present detailed simulations of the trajectory and emittance control algorithms that are foreseen for the...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Emittance Bumps in the NLC and USColdLC Main Linear Accelerators
We report on a series of studies on the effectiveness of closed orbit bumps in the linacs of the NLC and the USColdLC. In the first study, emittance dilutions of a pure-wakefield or pure-dispersion character are introduced in each linac, and a set of emittance bumps is tested to determine the most effective bump location in the linac, and the net effectiveness. In the second study, a more reali...
